Scale Recommendation Series - Craft Scales

There are a lot of crafts that can benefit from the use of a digital scale, but in this article we're going to focus on our most asked about applications: Soap, cosmetics, yarn and beading.

The black and silver My Weigh KD7000

Our most popular soap making scale, by far, is the My Weigh KD7000. It's precise enough to measure down to 1 gram and has a high capacity to handle most recipes plus your crock or bowl. I've used this scale with my large crock pot to make soap and it's perfect, (Just don't sit your hot crock on the scale. Pre-process weighing only!). What makes the KD7000 stand out from the rest is the replaceable, plastic "gunk shield" that protects the display and operating keys. This digital scale also has a removable stainless steel platform for easy cleanup.

The My Weigh UltraShip 35

If you're making big ol' batches of soap, you're going to need more capacity than the KD7000 can offer. In that case, check out the My Weigh UltraShip 35. It says shipping scale, but we've sold this model to many large batch soap makers who love it. The display pulls away from the scale and there is an optional stainless steel platform cover you can purchase for extra protection. Bonus: If ya make soap to sell, you can use the UltraShip to get shipping weights when you're done.

The My Weigh PalmScale 8 300

Cosmetics require a little more precision, especially if you're working with fragrances. For this application you'll want a scale with at least a 0.01 gram resolution. Our highest rated scale with this precision is the My Weigh PalmScale 8 Advance. This pocket scale has a 300 gram capacity with 0.01 gram resolution. Use this digital scale for your initial formulation.

The My Weigh iBalance 1200

After ya have your base measurements down, you can move up to a scale with a higher capacity and a lower resolution if ya need to. Check out the My Weigh iBalance 1200. This table top scale has a larger platform and comes with a power adapter to plug into the wall if ya don't want to use batteries. It has a 0.1 gram resolution and can measure over two pounds of ingredients. You can also use this precision scale to measure shipping weights if ya send off your makeup and fragrances to individual customers.

The Jscale CJ600

Since yarn is sold by weight it makes sense that one would need a scale to wind their skeins when they're packaging them for sale, but that's not all a scale is good for when it comes to yarn. If you knit or crochet often you probably have quite a few little balls of leftover yarn. You can use your scale to see how much length you have left, (as long as you have the original label that has the weight and yardage of the yarn) to see if ya have enough to finish your next project. This way you don't have to guess and can use up those little bits instead of creating more little balls of yarn by starting with a new skein. A digital scale also comes in handy when you're making pairs of things, like mittens or socks. You can, pretty quickly, separate your ball or skein in half for these projects with the help of a scale. Cool! A great scale for measuring yarn is the JScale CJ600. This precision scale can measure over a pound of yarn and comes with a protective cover you can use as a weighing bowl.

The JScale JSR200

Beading isn't easy, but making sure you have a sufficient amount of beads for your project can be. If your pattern calls for a specific weight of beads, or even a specific count, you can use our pocket scales to measure out your materials before ya start. The JScale JSR-200 is a great scale for this. Not only can it measure your beads with 0.01 gram precision, it can also count beads of a uniform size. The stainless steel platform has a lip around the edge to prevent beads from rolling off the platform or you can remove the protective cover and use it as a weighing tray.

No matter what your craft is, I'm betting there's room for a digital scale in there somewhere. Measuring, dividing, formulating and even shipping can be simplified with the help of a scale. If none of these scales do the trick give us a call! We'll do our best to help ya find your next scale.

Take care,
Shala
